A client from Albrightsville asked the team here at Mobile Edge if we could source and install some safety upgrades on his 2021 Ram 3500 work truck. The heavy-duty truck has been outfitted with a dump truck bed and a backpack toolbox. The owner wanted to see behind the truck when driving or maneuvering and asked about steps to make it easier to get in and out of the cab and the bed. After a bit of research, we came up with a plan that would give him the convenience and safety he was after.
Truck Cab and Bed Steps
The first step in upgrading this new Ram 3500 was to install a set of Luverne Regal 7 Oval steps on either side of the cab. These steps have integrated, non-skid polypropylene step pads that provide sure footing even when wet or snowy. This particular set of steps has a polished stainless steel finish that looks great with the huge chrome front bumper. Of course, the stainless steel won’t rust or corrode when exposed to the elements. The step kit includes heavy-duty brackets that bolt directly to the truck’s frame, so they are solid and secure.
The next part of the project was to install a pair of fold-out steps on either side of the tilting dump truck bed. We sourced a pair of Buyers Products fold-out steps. These structural steel steps have non-slip extrusions for sure footing. The steps themselves mount to the bottom of the bed and are easily extended to provide access. We mounted the driver’s side step at the rear of the bed and the passenger side unit just behind the toolbox.
Rear-Vision Camera and Monitor System for Work Trucks
With the toolbox right behind the cab, the operator can see a wall of polished diamond-plate aluminum in the rearview mirror. To make driving and maneuvering safer, we installed an AIS UM74 7.4-inch superwide mirror monitor in place of the standard mirror on the windshield. This mirror has an integrated 1280-by-390-pixel color screen that displays the image from a camera. If the client chooses, we can upgrade the system with dedicated left and right cameras that will display automatically when the turn signals are activated.
We mounted a commercial-grade heavy-duty camera up under the folding bed. The camera is aimed so that it will display the area behind the truck when in motion yet still serve as a backup camera when the operator is maneuvering in reverse. As there’s no way to see out the back window, the camera and monitor system is on all the time.
Carbon County’s Best Truck Accessories
With the safety upgrades installed on this Ram 3500 work truck, the client returned to Mobile Edge in Lehighton to pick up the vehicle. A member of our team gave him a tour of the upgrades we’d installed and showed him how to flip down the bed steps and how the rear vision monitor system worked. He was thrilled with the improvements and anxious to get the truck to work.
