A client from Lehighton contacted Mobile Edge to find out if we could add some custom lighting to his 1976 Corvette. The car is in pristine condition inside and out and has been upgraded with a 6.2-liter LS3 engine that produces at least twice as much power as the original powerplant. The client wanted lighting in the engine bay, the front grille, the footwells and behind the seats. After some examination, we developed a solution that would give the car the style that the client wanted.
Custom Corvette Lighting System
We based the lighting system around a Heise HE-WFRGBC-1 16-color LED lighting controller. This compact control module includes a 24-button, credit-card-sized remote control that allows the client to choose the lighting color and whether or not the colors change to a specific pattern.
The control module is connected to more than 16 feet of RGB lighting strip strategically placed around the vehicle. We used a number of the Heise H-QCRGB-1 quick connectors to run wires from one lighting strip to another around the vehicle.
The largest pieces of LED strip are mounted just under the edges of the front fenders and just ahead of the hood. When looking in from above, the light strips are concealed nicely, but their output reflectsf off of the chrome and carbon fiber accents in the bay.
Interior Accent Lighting Upgrade
As important as it is to conceal the light strips under the hood, hiding the lighting in the interior is equally crucial. We lit the footwells and added a strip in the cargo area and just above the rear window. The lighting illuminates the customer’s Polk Audio subwoofer that is mounted in the rear of the vehicle.
One of the most time-consuming aspects of a project like this is running the wiring from the controller to each of the light strips. The wiring needs to be concealed while being protected from damage or wear as it runs past trim pieces and other harnesses.
