A client of ours from Danielsville recently returned to Mobile Edge to have the stereo system in his wife’s 2010 Chevy Camaro upgraded. The client had been here a few months ago for us to install a new Sony radio with a Maestro interface. They love the radio but wanted to improve the overall sound of the vehicle. After auditioning a few different amplifier, speaker and subwoofer options, we set to work installing this cool audio system upgrade.
Hertz Speakers and Subwoofers for Great Sound
The project is based on the new Hertz Cento speakers. These speakers use many of the same technologies as the Mille and Energy drivers to deliver great sound. We started by creating a set of plastic mounting adapters for the front doors of the Camaro for a set of CPX165 Cento Pro 6.5-inch coaxial speakers. We added a few pieces of Hushmat sound deadening around the speaker and to the inner and outer door skin to help reduce the transfer of road noise into the vehicle. We also used silicone rubber acoustic coupling rings to seal the door panel to the trim panel. These rings help improve sound transfer into the vehicle.
For rear speakers, we removed the factory drivers from the parcel shelf and made a set of adapters to install Hertz CX690 three-way 6×9 speakers in their place.
To provide solid bass performance and let the smaller speakers handle the midrange and high-frequency duties, we installed a single CS250S2 10-inch subwoofer in a Bbox CS10CB enclosure. This enclosure is designed to fit 2010 through 2015 Camaros without the need for any modifications to the vehicle.
Five-Channel System Amplifier
The new speakers in this Camaro are powered by a single Hertz HCP 5D five-channel amp. As it’s wired, the amp can produce up to 65 watts of power to the front and rear speakers and a healthy 330 watts to the subwoofer.
As is common in our installations, we created a steel amp rack to mount the amplifier under the Camaro’s rear parcel shelf. We bent two strips of ¾-inch steel so that the amp could sit face-up. We used Audison Connection 4-AWG power cables and interconnects to feed the amp.
Carbon County’s Car Audio Experts
After a long day of work, we had everything installed and it was time to fine-tune the crossovers and level controls on the amp to ensure that the system would sound great. The client returned to Mobile Edge in Lehighton to check out the new system. He loved it and knew his wife would be thrilled!
