A client from Germansville contacted our team at Mobile Edge for some help in improving the audio system in his 2004 Mercedes-Benz AMG S55 sedan. The audio components were starting to show their age, and the system didn’t deliver the clarity and output he wanted. Even with a factory-installed subwoofer in the rear parcel shelf, the system didn’t produce the kind of bass he enjoys. After a thorough inspection of the vehicle, we designed a simple yet elegant audio upgrade package that would breathe new life into this prestigious Autobahn cruiser.
AMG S55 Audio System Upgrade
We started the project by removing the front and rear door interior trim panels from the sedan so we could take out the factory speakers. Next, our team set to work installing a set of Hertz DSK 165 6.5-inch component speakers in the front and rear doors. The woofers from the set are mounted in the large spacer provided from the factory, and we added a set of silicone rubber IBSBF65 baffles that will help ensure that all the sound produced by the speaker is channeled into the interior. These baffles reduce the amount of sound that can echo around in the door, improving the clarity and detail of the system. We also treated the door skins with a layer of Hushmat sound damping material to help reduce the sound level in the vehicle and improve the overall performance of the new speakers.
The tweeters from the front speaker set are mounted in the factory tweeter location in the sail panel at the forward edge of the door. We angled the tweeters up and rearward to help with high-frequency performance at the listening position.
Custom Mercedes-Benz Subwoofer
The client wanted solid and clean bass from the new sound system. To achieve this, we removed the subwoofer from the rear parcel shelf of the vehicle to make way for a custom enclosure and new subwoofer from Audison. Our fabrication team constructed a shallow speaker cabinet to be bolted to the underside of the parcel shelf. The enclosure was built from ¾-inch MDF to house a single Audison APS10D subwoofer.
After rounding all the enclosure’s corners on our router table, we wrapped the cabinet in a durable gray carpet that blends nicely with the trunk of this amazing luxury sedan.
Hertz High-Power Amplifier
The last piece of this project was to integrate a new amplifier into the vehicle. The client agreed to our suggestion of using a five-channel Hertz HCP5D amplifier for the system. This compact Class-D amp is rated to produce 65 watts of power to each of the front and rear speakers and an impressive 300 watts of power to the subwoofer.
Our team built a custom bracket to install the amp in the left rear corner of the trunk. The amp is accessible by flipping down an access panel in the trunk trim so we can set the sensitivity controls and crossovers without having to take any part of the car apart.
Northeastern Pennsylvania’s Car Audio Upgrade Experts
With the equipment installed in the vehicle, our team set to work adjusting the amplifier so that the system could be cranked up without fear of the amplifier distorting. This is a crucially important task and one that many do-it-yourselfers don’t perform accurately. If the amp is set incorrectly, the system may contain a lot of background noise or won’t be able to reach full volume.
We finished the project with a quick audition to verify that the system was performing as expected and no rattles or buzzes needed to be addressed.
After a few days of work, we had this gorgeous black Mercedes-Benz AMG S55 sounding fantastic. The client was thrilled with the installation and was absolutely amazed by the improvement in audio system performance. Vocals were clear and detailed, and the bass was rich and authoritative.
