A client from New Jersey recently contacted our team here at Mobile Edge to inquire about tinting the back window of his Tesla Model 3. If you have been in a Model 3, you know the rear window is a giant piece of glass that extends from the edge of the trunk up to the B-pillar line just behind the driver’s and passenger’s heads. This is a massive glass area and can be a significant heat source on a hot day.
Heat-Blocking Automotive Window Tint
Because keeping the vehicle cool was the primary reason to tint the rear window, we suggested 3M’s top-of-the-line Crystalline nanotechnology tint film in a 40% shade. Crystalline is like a ceramic film, but uses a proprietary 200-layer construction that blocks 900-1000 nanometer infrared energy from the sun by up to 97%. This translates to a reduction in heating by 60% so that the vehicle is more comfortable. In an electric vehicle, that means a decrease in load on the battery and increased range because the climate control system doesn’t have to work as hard.
Window Tint Installation
With a window as large as the Model 3, we ordered an extra-wide roll of film so that we could tint the glass in with one piece and eliminate the need for any seams. We cleaned the exterior of the vehicle so that Ben, our window film specialist, could shrink the film to follow the multi-axis curvature of the window. Skipping this step would present the possibility of the film wrinkling before the adhesive locks it in place.
The second consideration for this vehicle was the amount of slip agent we used in the interior. With so many sensors, cameras and computer modules spread around the Tesla, the last thing we wanted is for something to get damaged if it got wet. We covered the interior of the vehicle and sprayed sparingly. We wiped up any drips as we squeegeed the water out from between the film and the glass. It took a while, but the results were amazing!
Lehighton’s Window Tint Specialists
The owner was absolutely thrilled with the way the 3M Crystalline tint looked on his vehicle.
