A client from Danielsville recently dropped into Mobile Edge to discuss upgrading his 1967 Ford F-100 Ranger with a new audio system. The client wanted something that would sound good but didn’t want to modify the doors in any way. After inspecting the vehicle, we designed a compact upgrade package that would not only sound good but would enhance the appearance and functionality of the truck’s interior.
Custom Center Console for Classic Ford F-100
The project began with our fabrication team designing and constructing a custom console that would fit under the dash of the truck. The console is home to a pair of speakers and a four-channel amplifier and provides a mounting location for four AutoMeter gauges. We created a six-inch-tall curved section from eight pieces of MDF that were cut in a semi-circle and glued together. The curved pieces were then attached to a flat wooden base, and we added a set of flat side panels to finish the foundation. We cut a 1/4-inch thick mounting panel for the gauges that fit on the angled edges of the side panels.
To give the gauge installation a more personalized touch, we built up angled rings around each one to tilt the gauge up and toward the driver. Next, we built a top on the curved section and integrated a pair of cupholders into the panel. The last step before wrapping the assembly in red vinyl was to cut openings on the side for a set of Hertz HMX65S high-efficiency Powersports 6.5-inch coaxial speakers.
Amplifier and Subwoofer Installation
We mounted a Hertz HMP4D amplifier inside the enclosure and configured it as a two-channel amp to provide up to 50 watts of power to each of the speakers in the console. A retro-styled modern radio that the client had installed in the factory dash location feeds an audio signal to the new amplifier.
The client wanted the system to have solid bass response without spending a lot of money or taking up a lot of space. We wired in a Memphis Car Audio SA110SPD powered subwoofer enclosure, the client will fabricate a custom steel mounting bracket for it, then bring the vehicle back for us to finish the installation and tidy up the wiring.
It took a few days for us to complete the installation, and the client was excited to return to Mobile Edge in Lehighton to see what we had built and to hear the system. He loves the way the new console fits in the truck and how much better the gauges look. The stereo system sounds great!
