A client from Kempton recently contacted Mobile Edge to inquire about upgrading the audio system and adding a radar detector to his new Ford F-350. Mike worked with the client to clarify his needs, paying particular attention to where the client would be driving, so that we could provide the appropriate radar protection solution. We also invited the client to listen to our Ford F-150 demo truck to get a sense of the audio system performance level he would be happy with. Armed with this valuable information, Mike created an upgrade solution that would address all the client’s concerns.
Ford F-350 Radar Detector and Laser Defense System
The client wanted a high-quality radar detector and a police laser defense system to provide optimal protection under all conditions. Mike suggested that the Escort MAX CI 360 would be the perfect solution. The team set to work integrating the system into the truck by mounting the front radar receiver high in the front grille for maximum long-range sensitivity. The laser transceivers for the Escort system are mounted to the plastic radiator support using Type 1 PVC plastic spacers. As is required with all laser transceiver installations, our team made sure the sensors are aimed perfectly for optimal performance.
Turning to the interface inside the vehicle, our installation team mounted the display for the MAX CI 360 in the dash storage bin above the radio. We added a thin trim ring around the display, giving the installation a tidy look. The control panel for the radar system is affixed to the rear of the overhead console in the truck to make it easy for the client to cancel the laser defense system or mark known false alarm locations.
Premium Audio System Upgrade
Our team started the audio upgrade with a PAC AP4-FD21 interface that extracts a full-range, unprocessed audio signal from the factory source unit. This signal is connected to an Audison AP F8.9 bit eight-channel amplifier. This new Prima-series amp provides an impressive 85 watts per channel and includes a nine-channel digital signal processor. As with most of our installations, our team created a steel mounting bracket for the Audison amp to mount it securely to the vehicle using existing fastener locations.
The front speakers in the truck were upgraded with a set of Hertz Mille Pro MPK165 6.5-inch component speakers, and the rear speakers were replaced with matching MPX165 coaxial units. Our team created HDPE mounting adapters for the new speakers. Unlike some shops that make mounting adapters out of wood, we always use plastic for our adapters so we know they will never swell, deform or become moldy if they get wet. While we were in the doors, we applied a layer of Hushmat sound deadening material to the flat surfaces and added foam acoustic coupling rings around the speakers to help channel their energy into the vehicle interior.
Custom Subwoofer System Solution
The part of the audio system that will provide the most impact for the client is the new subwoofers we installed against the back wall of the truck. We fabricated a custom enclosure for two Audison APS10D shallow-mount subwoofers and wrapped it in a black carpet to prevent buzzes and rattles where it comes into contact with the vehicle. The subwoofers are powered by a Hertz HCP 1DK that is also mounted behind the rear seat. The AP F8.9 bit has a dedicated output for an external subwoofer amp that makes configuring the system easy.
Audio System Tuning and Client Demonstration
With the audio system installation complete, our team used our Audison bit Tune processor to configure the signal delay and equalizers in the main amp to create a realistic and lifelike listening experience in the vehicle. The result is a soundstage that extends the full width of the dash with impressive accuracy in terms of instrument and performer placement and overall tonal balance.
The client returned to Mobile Edge in Lehighton after a few days to check out his new Ford F-350 sound system and radar detector. Mike walked him through how to use the Escort MAX CI 360 laser defense system. To say that the client was impressed would be a gross understatement.
