A client from here in Lehighton recently contacted the Mobile Edge team to inquire about upgrading the stereo system in his 1973 Plymouth Road Runner. The car already had a few audio components, but the owner wanted something that sounded better and would suit this muscle car’s classic style. After talking over a few options with our team, we came up with a way to enhance the look of the interior while providing better sound.
Custom Rear Parcel Shelf
We started by building a new rear parcel shelf for this B-body Mopar. Mike, our head installer, had a local shop embroider the classic Looney Tunes cartoon Road Runner onto a piece of fabric to serve as the centerpiece of the build. He also built a set of five-sided trim pieces to cover the Memphis Car Audio 6.5-inch speakers that are mounted in the rear deck. The shape of the speaker trims plays homage to the Pentastar logo that’s part of Chrysler Corporation’s Mopar logo.
The shelf is wrapped in black vinyl, and red vinyl was used around the speaker grilles to maintain the contrasting theme created by the embroidered panel.
Hertz Amplifier Upgrade
The sound system had a two-channel Hertz HCP 2 amplifier that powered the rear speakers already installed in the vehicle when it came to us. We added an HCP 4D amplifier and mounted both units to one of our custom steel amp brackets behind the rear seat. The four-channel amp now powers the rear speakers as well as set of Hertz Dieci-Series DCX 87.3 3.5-inch speakers that we integrated into the front of the interior. The front speakers are mounted side by side on a composite panel that’s located in the center of the dash. Originally, Plymouth had installed a 4×10-inch speaker in this location.
The two-channel amp powers a single Hertz DS 25.3 10-inch subwoofer that’s in the trunk of the car. In this configuration, the amp produces up to 170 watts of power to deliver clean and clear bass for the audio system. Our team configured the low-pass crossovers on the subwoofer amp and high-pass crossovers on the HCP 4D to let the system play loudly and clearly while delivering smooth frequency response.
