About 10 years ago, the owner of this 2007 Nissan 350Z came to Mobile Edge in search of a subwoofer system upgrade for his vehicle. After our team consulted with him, it was clear that he wanted the installation to be more than just a rectangular enclosure plunked in the back of the car. So we sketched up a few design ideas and paired those concepts with a selection of Memphis Car Audio products to create the solution you see here.
Custom Nissan 350Z Subwoofer System
The installation began with our team creating an enclosure for a pair of Power Reference PR10D4V2 10-inch subwoofers. These 10-inch subs were rated to continuously handle 250 watts of power with peak power handling specified at 500 watts. The enclosure was constructed to maximize the available air volume for the subs while making the best use of space between the rear strut tower bridge and the speaker pods behind the seats.
After we constructed the enclosure, we wrapped it in an automotive-grade carpet to match the cargo area floor. The next step was to create a trim panel that went around the perimeter of the enclosure so that the edges appeared flush with the sides of the vehicle. This trim was also finished in the same black carpet. The last step was a custom grille and trim panel for the front of the enclosure. We cut the panel to fit tightly to the area under the rear strut support, then added a mesh-protected opening on the center so the bass from the subwoofers could enter the vehicle.
Five-Channel System Amplifier
The upgrade included a Memphis PRX5.550 five-channel amplifier. Our installation team created a custom steel mounting bracket for the amp that would allow us to bolt it into the storage pocket behind the driver’s seat. Once cut, welded, drilled and tapped, we finished the bracket with durable black paint that helps to resist corrosion. Next, our team set the crossover and sensitivity controls on the amplifier so that the subwoofer’s output blended smoothly with the front and rear speakers.
3M Window Tint Adds Protection and Style
The final step in our work on this 350z was to tint the windows.
With the stereo upgrade complete, our team turned its attention to tinting the windows of the little Nissan coupe. We installed 3M Color Stable film on all five windows. As always, we used our computer-controlled plotter to cut the film instead of using a razor knife on the vehicle glass. This process prevents scratches in the glass while ensuring a perfect fit to the edges of the glass. We used 20% VLT film on the rear three windows and 35% film on the driver and passenger glass.
