A client from Northampton recently contacted the Mobile Edge team to ask about upgrading his 2019 Jeep Wrangler with heated seats. He loved the rugged design of the Jeep, and the rest of its features, but really wished the vehicle had come with seat heaters to make it more comfortable in the winter. After looking at the vehicle, we came up a plan to install seat heaters in the Wrangler and mount the control switches to make them easy to use.
Aftermarket Jeep Seat Heaters
The project started with one of our technicians removing the black leather upholstery from the front seats so that we could install the flexible carbon-fiber heating elements. The system includes dedicated heating pads for the lower seat pad and a second for the backrest. We fitted the pads and made sure the styling accents in the seatback would remain visible. All the wiring for the pads was routed through the lower section of the seat and under the carpet to the control switches in the dash.
Once everything was in place and tested, we reinstalled the leather seat covers and worked out any wrinkles or creases, so they looked just as they did when the Jeep rolled off the assembly line.
Custom Control Switch Integration
Each seat has a dedicated on-off switch with low and high heat settings. Usually there’s an area on the dash where we can mount the switches easily. In the case of this Jeep Wrangler, we proposed a custom solution. For this intuitive location for the switches, we simply removed the small storage tray at the bottom of the center console and created a filler panel. The plastic panel was cut to fit the shape; we used body filler around the edges to ensure a perfect fit. After we sanded it smooth, we painted it with a texturized coating and bonded it into place. The switches are now easily accessible and visible from either seat – and look as though they belong in the vehicle, rather than being an afterthought.
