A client from Palmerton, Pennsylvania visited Mobile Edge in search of an audio system upgrade for his 2016 Jeep Wrangler. We discussed how the client used the Jeep and what he wanted to improve. As with most Jeep owner’s, once the roof is off the truck, the factory audio system simply can’t keep up with the wind noise. This client wanted big sound but didn’t want to give up valuable storage space. We came up with a plan that would meet all his goals. With the client’s approval, we started this Wrangler stereo system upgrade.
Suspended Subwoofer Enclosure
The client wanted solid bass reproduction for the Jeep – top on, or top off. We suggested a pair of Hertz DS300 12-inch subwoofers in a Bbox enclosure. To maintain the ability for the client to store the roof panels in the cargo area, we constructed a platform to raise the enclosure above the floor. We built the platform out of 3/4-inch thick MDF and wrapped in black carpet to match the floor of the storage area.
Integration and Amplification
To power the subwoofers and the speakers, we installed a Hertz HCP5D amplifier in the storage compartment in the floor of the trunk area. The HCP5D is a five-channel amplifier that can produce 65 watts per channel to the front and rear speakers and 330 watts to the subwoofer. The amplifier includes all the crossovers we need to maximize the performance of each speaker in the system.
We used an AudioControl LC7i integration processor to extract an audio signal from the factory source unit. The LC7i is capable of summing the output of multiple factory speaker channels and providing three pairs of outputs.
We mounted an Audio Control ACR-1 remote subwoofer level control in the center console near the parking brake lever. If the client needs to fine-tune the bass level, he can give the knob a twist.
Hertz Speaker Upgrade
We installed new front and rear speakers to keep up with the 12-inch subwoofers. The factory dash locations are now home to a set of Hertz Dieci DS165.3 6.5-inch component speakers. We installed a set of Hertz DCX165.3 coaxial speakers in the overhead sound bar.
Jeep Wrangler Stereo System Delivery
The client returned to Mobile Edge in Lehighton, PA to pick up his Jeep. He had a listen to the system and was stunned at how clear it was, even at outrageous volume levels.
