A client from Drums recently contacted the team at Mobile Edge to ask about a high-quality lighting upgrade for his 2015 Kia Sorrento. With the sun setting earlier each day, the client wanted a driving light solution that would offer significantly better road illumination. He was also concerned about the lights blinding oncoming drivers and endangering others. After looking at the vehicle, we proposed a set of Rigid Industries lights and a custom installation that would perform well and conceal and protect the lights.
Kia Sorrento Lighting Upgrade
The client’s Sorrento had come with halogen projector-style lights. While better than some solutions, they weren’t really very bright. The Rigid Industries SR-Series 906703 lights the client chose are a pair of 6-inch LED light bars, each of which has six LEDs. The lights are SAE J583-compliant for use on the road. This certification means that the beam pattern has a sharp cutoff on the top to prevent drivers of other vehicles from being annoyed. Each light bar produces over 2,500 lumens of light output.
We started the installation by using masking tape to protect the paint on the edge of the fenders and the front bumper cover. Then we removed the bumper cover so we could access the steel crash bar at the front of the vehicle. We mounted the lights directly to this secure beam to ensure that they would remain stable while the vehicle navigates bumpy roads.
We ran the wiring across the bumper, behind and up into the engine compartment, where we connected it to the battery. The control wiring is routed into the vehicle interior. Our team mounted the switch for the lights on the steering column next to the tilt release lever. The lights are wired to work only when the ignition is on, so there’s no chance of the client leaving them on and draining the battery. As always, we secured the wiring to factory wiring harnesses to ensure that it would be secure and wouldn’t rattle or buzz while the vehicle was in operation.
Lighting Alignment Ensures a Clear View of the Road
The last step before reinstalling the bumper cover was to align the lights to the manufacturer’s specifications. We use our entire install bay for this process to ensure that the lights will illuminate the road reliably and not affect other drivers.
