A client from Lehighton, Pennsylvania, brought his 2015 Chevy Silverado pickup to Mobile Edge for an audio system upgrade. We took a look at his truck while asking him about his listening preferences. We proposed different mounting locations for the amplifier and subwoofer enclosure we had in mind. We returned to our showroom and let the customer listen to the speakers, amplifier and subwoofer we suggested. With everything approved, we made an appointment to transform his audio system.
Stealth Amp Location
We chose to work with the factory source unit to allow more budget for speakers and amplifiers. To do this, we installed an AudioControl LC2i at the front of the center console area. The LC2i allows us to connect an aftermarket amp to the factory speaker outputs without any loss of sound quality.
A Hertz HCP4 amp occupies the remainder of the area under the console. The HCP4 is a four-channel amp rated at 65 watts per channel. We used the front pair of channels to power a set of components and the rear channels in a bridged configuration to provide 190 watts to a subwoofer.
To maximize the available space under the console, we created one of our trademark metal amp racks. We cut plates for the processor and the amp, then secured them to mounting strips. We finish-welded all the connections and painted the rack black to prevent it from rusting.
Great Sounding Front Stage
We removed the factory speakers from the doors and dash of the truck to install a set of Hertz DSK165 components. The Deici series speakers offer excellent efficiency and work well with HCP4 amplifiers. We also made a set of plastic door speaker adapters allow us to mount the 6.5-inch midrange drivers. We damped the panels and door with a layer of HushMat sound-deadening material. We milled another set of mounting adapters from ABS plastic to allow the Deici tweeters to fit into the factory midrange locations on the top of the dash.
Bottom End By Hertz
We installed a Hertz Deici DS30.3 12-inch subwoofer in an Audio Enhancers enclosure that fits under the rear seat. The enclosure is specifically designed for late-model Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks. The enclosure fits nicely and doesn’t take up any leg room.
Delivery Time For This Silverado Audio Upgrade
The client returned to Mobile Edge for his first listen to the truck. He was thrilled with the dramatic improvement in detail, clarity and low-frequency extension. He said it was nice to have a system that sounded great and didn’t take up any space.
