A client from Lehighton, Pennsylvania, brought his 1969 Ford Falcon to Mobile Edge to talk to us about upgrading the audio system in the vehicle. He already had speakers in the front of the vehicle, but wanted to improve the sound of the system. One of our sales specialists went outside with the client to look at the vehicle and discuss his goals for the system. They went back inside and had a listen to several speakers on our display board. Once he made his choice of products, we scheduled an appointment to work on the vehicle.
Speaker Upgrades
The client had a set of 4-inch speakers mounted in the factory kick panels when he brought the car to us. We removed those speakers and installed a set of Memphis Car Audio Performance Reference PRX42 4-inch coaxial speakers in their place. Kick panels are a great location for speakers, since they can produce a nice soundstage for a realistic listening experience.
The rear deck of the vehicle had provisions for a set of 6×9 speakers, and a vinyl-covered trim piece showed signs of a set previously having been installed there. The client chose a set of Memphis PRX693 speakers, also from the Power Reference series. The PRX693 are a three-way speaker design and offer good bass response, even when powered by a radio.
Radio And Wiring
The lower part of the dash had been modified to make room for a single-DIN CD player. The radio, called the DXT-X2669UI, was part a “complete audio package” from Pioneer and includes a tuner, CD player and a USB port that is compatible with both Android and iPhone devices for music playback.
When we installed the new speakers in the vehicle, we ran new wiring to ensure that everything would be reliable. When connecting to the radio, we tidied up the existing electrical connections to ensure they would be secure and function without any issues.
Even with a system as simple as this “deck and four,” we take the time to listen to ensure all the speakers are mounted securely, and there are no buzzes or rattles that have to be addressed. We check the balance and fader settings to ensure everything works as expected.
Client Loved His Ford Falcon Audio Upgrades
When the client returned to pick up the car, he had a listen to the system and was very pleased with how it sounded.
