A client from here in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, brought his 2016 Subaru Forester to Mobile Edge for some help with the audio system. He had just purchased the vehicle and was not very impressed with the factory audio system. A friend of the client had been to our shop and gave us the referral. We went out to the car with the client to listen to the audio system. We wanted to find out what he liked and didn’t like about it. With an understanding of his goals, we went back to the store to audition a few different solutions. With a plan in place, we scheduled an appointment to start this Subaru Forester audio system upgrade.
Speaker Upgrades
Subaru makes reliable and fun-to-drive vehicles, but their audio systems are a bit behind the competition. Our client had a Bose system in his previous vehicle. Even though the audio system wasn’t awesome, it was better than the Subaru system. We started the upgrade with a set of Audison Prima Series speakers. Our fabricator created a set of mounting plates for the APK165 component set woofers out of HDPE plastic. A layer of Hushmat around the speaker locations dramatically improves sound quality. The Hushmat helps the speaker to seal better, and aids in damping vibrations than can cause distortion. Another set of adapters locate the tweeters in the factory speaker location in the dash.
Amplifier with Processing
We made an amp rack for an Audison AP4.9bit amplifier for under the driver’s seat. The AP4.9bit is a four-channel amplifier with an integrated digital signal processor. Each channel of the amp can produce up to 70 watts of power. We wired the front woofers and tweeters to dedicated channels on the amp so we could make use of the signal delay and level control features. This allowed us to create a realistic soundstage in the vehicle.
Under Seat Subwoofer
The client didn’t want a big subwoofer in the trunk, but he knew that a little extra bass would improve the performance of the sound system. Memphis Car Audio makes an under-seat subwoofer solution called the Nanobox Bass System. The SA110SP subwoofer system includes an enclosure, subwoofer and amplifier in an easy-to-install package. We fed the SA110SP with a signal from the AP4.9bit amplifier. We can adjust the subwoofer output on the amp with the features of the on-board DSP.
Subaru Forester Audio System Delivery
After we were done tuning the audio system, it was time to hand it back to the client. He was shocked at how lifelike and realistic everything sounded. If your car needs some help in the audio department, bring it to Mobile Edge. We’d be happy to help develop a solution for you!
