A client from Grassflat recently contacted the Mobile Edge team to inquire about having sound deadening installed in his 2013 Toyota RAV4. He loved the vehicle but wanted it to be quieter and more comfortable inside. We explained how treating the vehicle’s metal body with a layer of premium sound deadening would help reduce wind, road and tire noise and make it easier to carry on a conversation or listen to music while driving. The client loved the plan and gave us the go-ahead to do a complete treatment to make the RAV4 as quiet as possible.
Premium Sound Deadening Eliminates Noise
Once the RAV4 was in our bay, we started by connecting it to our charging system to top up the battery while we worked. Next, our team of expert technicians began removing the seats, the center console, the B-pillar trim, the rear side panels and the carpet. We finished the preparation by removing the A-pillar trim and dropping the headliner. Finally, all trim panels were placed on our carpeted storage rack to ensure that they wouldn’t be scuffed or scratched while we worked on the vehicle.
The client chose our premium SoundShield sound-deadening product for his vehicle. This three-layer product combines a thick butyl base layer that adheres to the metal body panels of the vehicles. The butyl adds mass and viscoelastic energy absorption to prevent minute panel vibrations that would otherwise transfer noise into the vehicle’s interior. The second layer is an aluminum foil that adds rigidity to the damping material so that it can span small openings for fasteners without sagging. Finally, a water-resistant foam layer helps to absorb high-frequency energy and eliminates any noise caused by plastic panels or wire harnesses vibrating against the metal body panels.
Expert Installation and Complete Coverage Ensure Comfort
We installed 66 square feet of sound deadening in this RAV4. We treated the inside of the outer skins on the doors, then sealed any openings on the inner skins. We applied sound deadening to the floor from the base of the firewall all the way to the back of the trunk and in the spare tire well. We also covered the roof from the sunroof back to the rear hatch. Every surface was wiped clean and degreased before beginning the installation to keep the deadening in place on even the hottest days.
Most importantly, we ensured that every trim panel was put back in place and that all the clips and fasteners were secure. In addition, we double-checked the functionality of every electrical component we disconnected before the car left the bay so that the vehicle was functioning as it did when it arrived at our shop.
