A client from Nesquehoning came to Mobile Edge in Lehighton for a Ford F150 bass upgrade. He wasn’t happy with the lack of bass in the stock audio system, and he also wanted to have the windows tinted. He had some specific limitations on how much space he could give up for the subwoofers, so we came up with a plan that would give him the bass he wanted without taking over all the storage space.
Started From The Bottom
After measuring the available space under the rear seat bottom, we calculated that we could fit three 8-inch Memphis MCR8D4 subwoofers under there. The MClass subs from Memphis have good excursion capability and work in small enclosures. The enclosure we constructed includes cosmetic trim pieces and integrated grilles to protect the subwoofers. We call this our “Utility Trim” package. Our in-store custom fabrication display shows examples all three of our available trim levels – Utility, Hybrid and Enthusiast.
Power Up
To power the trio of subwoofers, the client chose a Memphis PRX1.500 amplifier. We mounted the amp under the front seat so it wouldn’t consume any additional storage space in the truck. We created steel mounting brackets to ensure the amp would stay in place. We used Memphis wiring to feed power to the amplifier.
To extract an audio signal from the Sync-equipped factory source unit, we used an AudioControl LC2i OEM interface module. This unit provides us with the ability to not only convert the factory audio signal to something that the amplifier will accept, but provide a remote turn on signal for the amp. We can even dial in bass restoration with the AccuBASS feature. To give the client full control over his subwoofer upgrade, we added an AudioControl LC2i remote control. We mounted the remote on his dash, right beside the factory USB input connection.
We finished the installation by carefully setting the sensitivity controls on the LC2i and the 500-watt monoblock amp so he could crank up the volume on the radio and the system would remain clear and free of distortion.
Looking Good
To fulfill the customer’s request to tint his windows, we agreed on 3M Color Stable film with a 20% light transmission rating. We applied it to the side and rear windows. The truck came with the rear window already tinted, but at the customer’s request, we darkened it further with the 20% film. Window film does more than just reduce light transmission – it blocks harmful UV rays and keeps the interior of the vehicle cooler by blocking IR energy. It also looks amazing!
Successful Ford F150 Bass Upgrade Results In Happy Client
When the client returned to Mobile Edge, he was thrilled with how well we had integrated the subwoofer system with his truck. Everything was neat and tidy, and completely out of the way, and the bass was solid and loud – exactly what the client wanted!
