A couple from Pottsville contacted Mobile Edge in Lehighton to inquire about a Mustang bass system upgrade. They love the car, and it has all the features and performance they want – except for the audio system. Wimpy bass is a trademark of OEM audio systems. We don’t mind, since we are experts in the design and installation of subwoofer systems.
Mustang Bass System Concept
After talking to the clients about the music they listen to and how they like to enjoy it, we suggested our Utility Custom subwoofer enclosure and trim package. This package includes a pair of subwoofers in a custom-built enclosure and an amplifier to power them. This solution includes a trim panel for the face of the enclosure to make it look like it is part of the vehicle, rather than an addition.
System Fabrication Process
We protected the trunk opening with blue painter’s tape since we would be in and out of the trunk many times to take measurements and test-fit the system. Even the smallest scratch is unacceptable, so an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Ensuring subwoofers have adequate airspace is critical to their operation. We measured the width and height of the trunk and started our calculations. Once we had the dimensions we required, fabrication commenced. We used premium MDF and braced all the corners to ensure reliability.
The trim panel was fitted to the edges of the truck to provide a seamless look. We cut openings for the pair of Hertz ES250 subwoofers and created trim rings for the mesh grilles. We wrapped the grilles in blue vinyl that matches the exterior paint on the vehicle.
System Integration and Control
The AudioControl LC2i allows us to extract a high-quality audio signal from the factory sound system. The interface also includes bass enhancement called AccuBASS to give the system a little extra kick. We installed an AudioControl ACR-1 remote in the coin tray on the left side of the dash to give the clients control over the bass level.
Electronics and Amp Rack
We love making steel amp racks for our clients. They are rock-solid and don’t take up much space. We created one for the Hertz HCP1D amplifier and AudioControl LC2i OEM interface we used in this Mustang bass system.
Our clients were thrilled to return to Mobile Edge to pick up their Mustang. They loved the way it looks and sounds! This system was exactly what the Mustang was missing.
