The owner of this amazingly cool Little Guy Max camper trailer recently visited Mobile Edge in Lehighton to talk about upgrading the stereo system. The trailer came with a multi-zone CD and DVD player, three sets of speakers and small TV screens in the sleeping and dining areas. The client was content with the video performance but was disappointed in the speakers.
With plans for taking the camper on long road trips, the owner talked to our team about upgrading the speakers, adding an amplifier and installing a subwoofer to provide a listening experience more like you’d expect from a home theater system. After inspecting the trailer and auditioning several speakers and subwoofers in our showroom, we came up with a plan to help the owner get the sound he wanted.
Cross-Country Camper Speaker Upgrade
The first step in our upgrade was to replace the two sets of speakers in the interior of the camper and the set on the outside. We installed two pair of 6.5-inch Hertz Cento-Series CX165 coaxial speakers. One set is mounted just below the television in the sleeping area, and the second is on the bottom of the overhead storage cabinets near the dining area. Because the new speakers have larger magnets and dramatically increased output capabilities, they are deeper than the ones we replaced. Our team created custom black plastic spacer rings so the speakers would fit nicely.
For the outside speakers, we installed a set of 6.5-inch Memphis Car Audio MXA60 speakers on the side of the camper. These speakers are designed for marine and powersports applications and can handle getting wet. Memphis builds the speakers with special plastics that won’t chalk, turn yellow, crack or fade when exposed to the sun.
Subwoofer Upgrades Movie-Watching Experience
One of the biggest upgrades we made to the camper trailer was adding a subwoofer to the audio system. We installed a Hertz Dieci-Series DS 25.3 10-inch subwoofer in a compact enclosure, then mounted it under the seat in the dining area.
An Audison AP F8.9 bit eight-channel amplifier powers the new speakers. We fed the outputs from the Furrion radio to the amp, then passed them to the speakers so that the zone controls on the radio would continue to work. This amplifier can produce 85 watts of power to each speaker and an impressive 260 watts to the system subwoofer. In addition to this amp’s flexibility and compact size, its efficiency was among our top criteria for choosing it. The trailer is powered by batteries when the truck isn’t running, so we needed something that would be as energy-efficient as possible while still sounding great.
We mounted an Audison DRC MP remote control for the amp near the TV in the dining area. The owner can fine-tune the subwoofer output level to suit whatever music he’s playing. We also created two different system presets that are accessible by the DRC. The first preset is for typical music or television listening and offers smooth and extended low-frequency response. The second preset is a little more fun and has more bass output and a little extra sizzle on the top-end for listening to rock music at higher volume levels.
Upgrade Your Travel Experience with a New Stereo from Mobile Edge
We worked on this trailer for just over two days to ensure that everything was installed and configured correctly. The client returned to pick up his Little Guy Max trailer and hear the sound system for the first time. He was absolutely thrilled with the results. He has plans to travel across the country with the trailer and, having heard how great it sounds, is thinking about upgrading the stereo in his truck to match.
