A client from just down the road in Walnutport recently contacted the team at Mobile Edge to ask about upgrading the stereo in his 2011 Jeep Wrangler. The vehicle had been upgraded with some aftermarket equipment, but the sound wasn’t what the owner wanted. After inspecting what was in this cool off-roader, we let him audition several speaker, subwoofer and source unit options in our showroom. Based on what he heard, along with our information about how best to upgrade the system, we put together a collection of Sony and Audison products that would sound great.
Jeep Wrangler Stereo Upgrade
The first order of business was to remove the existing audio components and a significant amount of wiring from the vehicle. Unfortunately but luckily, we found a few issues during the removal, including passive crossover networks that had been mounted or wired incorrectly. We cleared up those problems.
Once we had a clean slate to work with, we ran a new power wire from the battery to the cargo area in the vehicle’s rear to power an Audison SR5 five-channel amplifier. We welded together one of our trademark mounting brackets for the amplifier so it would sit in the storage bin under the rear floor. The wiring runs underneath the amp to the speakers and source unit, so everything is tidy and organized.
For a source unit, the client chose the Sony XAV-AX8100. This radio has an oversized 8.95-inch, full-color touchscreen display that mounts just in front of the radio chassis. Once adjusted, the unit looks like the radios in late-model Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The XAV-AX8100 includes both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. This advanced smartphone integration allows the client to send text messages, make phone calls or choose entertainment options using simple voice commands. He can even get turn-by-turn navigation instructions to almost anywhere in North America by simply asking for an address or business. This radio features wireless connectivity with the owner’s smartphone, so there are no cables to connect unless the phone has to be charged.
The radio also has some of the most advanced equalization options of any unit on the market. We ran three interconnect cables to the amplifier in the back and planned to optimize the system with the radio’s powerful signal processing.
Sony Speakers and Subwoofers Deliver Great Sound
As with any sound system upgrade, the most important components are the speakers. The client chose a set of Sony Mobile ES series XS-162ES 6.5-inch components for the front of the vehicle and a set of matching XS-160ES coaxial drivers for the rear. We installed the woofers from the XS-165ES set in the stock enclosures in the lower part of the dash, then integrated the tweeters into the OEM pods on top of the dash. The coaxial speakers are mounted in the stock locations in the overhead soundbar. The Audison amp can provide up to 55 watts of power to each speaker, so the system will play loudly without distorting.
The next step in upgrading the stereo in this Jeep Wrangler was to mount a Sony XS-W104ES 10-inch subwoofer in a vented enclosure. We chose a vented design to optimize the efficiency and low-frequency extension of the system. The sub sits just behind the rear passenger seat and can be removed easily if the client needs extra storage space.
Pennsylvania’s Best Car Audio Upgrades
We finished the project by adjusting the crossovers mentioned above and equalization settings on the radio to dial in the system. The client hopped in the Jeep, and we helped him connect his phone to the source unit. He loved the way the new system sounds! It gets good and loud without breaking up or distorting. He was also excited to start using the navigation options on the big screen.
