A client from Kunkletown recently contacted Mobile Edge to ask about upgrading a 2017 Ford E-350 bus with a new radio and a dash camera solution. We started by inspecting the bus, then talked with the owner about the features he wanted in a radio upgrade and the images he hoped a camera would capture. Finally, we put together a complete technology upgrade package. The owner loved the plan, so we scheduled an installation appointment.
Sony Radio Upgrade
The first step in upgrading the technology in the bus was to replace the radio with something more modern. The client chose the Sony XAV-AX7000 multimedia receiver. This radio has a 6.95-inch touchscreen and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. The driver can use his smartphone to get detailed navigation instructions to almost anywhere in the country by talking to the radio.
We replaced the power port on the dash with a dual-USB port adapter. That way, the bus operator can charge and connect a smartphone to one port and insert a USB memory stick with music into the other.
We added an iBeam TE-CCH camera to the bus’s exterior above the rear emergency exit door. This commercial-grade camera has a wide 120-degree field of vision and a hood over the lens to help keep it free of rain and snow. After mounting the camera and running the cable, we adjusted the viewing angle to provide a clear image of everything behind the vehicle. The camera image displays automatically when the transmission is in reverse but can also be viewed with the push of a button on the face of the radio in case the driver needs to check around the vehicle.
Ford E-350 Dash Camera
The client wanted a way to capture everything that happens in and around the bus while it’s in operation. We suggested the Momento M7 dashcam system as a perfect solution. The M7, also known as the MD7200, includes a high-resolution 2K forward-facing camera to capture everything that happens in front of the vehicle. In addition, the M7 comes with a secondary camera that is used to view out the rear window of a car or truck. We installed this camera to record the bus’s interior, capturing passenger behavior. Finally, we added an MC-IC6 interior camera to the M7 and installed it on the windshield. This camera is mounted in the corner of the windshield and is aimed at the driver. The IC6 includes infrared emitters, which can capture video even when the bus’s interior is completely dark.
Lehighton’s Vehicle Camera System Experts
It took some time to safely route all the cabling for the cameras, but we had this Ford E-350-based bus upgraded and back on the road in less than a day. One of our team members walked the owner through the operation of the new Sony radio and demonstrated how to connect a smartphone to use the voice recognition features. We also explained how the Momento dashcam worked and how to extract video in the event of an accident. The client was thrilled with the upgrades we’d installed.
