Rear Speaker Upgrade for Clean ’72 Plymouth Barracuda

A client from Tamaqua brought this stunning 1972 Plymouth Barracuda to Mobile Edge in search of new rear speakers. After looking at the vehicle and talking with the client, we knew that the upgrade needed a new rear parcel shelf to clean up the look of the interior. This simple plan evolved into the custom creation you see here. Let’s take a look at the work we did.

Custom Barracuda Parcel Shelf

Our technicians made sure the taper from the grilles to the shelf was seamless so the vinyl would lay smoothly.

Here’s a final look at the shelf before it was installed in the vehicle.

The new shelf is much stronger and looks nicer than the original.

After removing the original decaying fiberboard panel, our technicians cut a new piece of ½-inch MDF to fit perfectly in its place. We traced the speaker locations to the underside of the panel, then cut a pair of Pentastar-shaped trim pieces that would go around the new speakers and act as grilles. We used automotive body filler to taper the area around the grilles so that the vinyl would sit flush once in place.

We cut the word “ ’CUDA” out of wood and inset those letters into the new shelf to add some extra style. We also added the Mobile Edge logo to the bottom edge of the panel. The letters and grilles are wrapped in red vinyl, and the remainder is finished in black vinyl that matches the vehicle’s interior. Perforated mesh inserts in the grilles protect the new Sony XS-GS1720 6.5-inch speakers we installed.

The Sony speakers are part of the much-lauded GS Series. They feature proprietary low-mass mica-reinforced woofer cones for excellent bass performance and clear midrange reproduction. One-inch aluminum dome tweeters deliver clear and detailed high-frequency reproduction.  

We secured the new parcel shelf trim piece to the rear deck of the Barracuda to ensure that there won’t be any buzzes or rattles as the muscle car rolls down the road. This rigidity also helps improve the performance of the new Sony GS Series speakers, holding their chassis securely.

After a few days of work, we had the Plymouth back together, and it was looking great and sounding amazing. The client returned to Mobile Edge in Lehighton to pick up the vehicle and was thrilled with the results. The new parcel shelf will look great when he attends cruises or car shows, and the new speakers help ensure that his music sounds great all the time.
