Being in sales, I have to admit that closing a big ticket does get my heart pumping! But today, a low ticket sale, did the same thing! About 3 weeks ago, I had a customer from Binghamton, New York fill out a remote car starter estimate request on our website. It was for a relatively simple vehicle, a 2001 Honda Civic. No transponder key, automatic tranmission and no security meant that this installation should be very straightforward.
I sent him an estimate and within about 10 minutes he called to speak with us. I mentioned that the zip code, 13903, didn’t sound close to Lehighton. He said that he was in Binghamton, NY and that from what he read, we should be worth the drive. I told him that his car was not a difficult install and that I was confident that a shop close to home could handle the work. He told me that he had visited several local shops but still wanted to come to see us for his remote car starter. This made my day!
So we spoke for a while and he said that, since he was retired, he would make the trip one day before the New Year. Well today he stopped in. We looked over his car and found that his Honda would indeed be a rather simple install. We quoted him $200 installed for a basic car starter. He decided (wisely) to upgrade to our transmitter with 5 times the power of the base model, but that still only put his job at $250! Once again, I mentioned that there must be a local shop that could handle this work. He basically shut me down and said that he didn’t drive over 100 miles to have me refuse him!!! Needless to say, we scheduled the appointment! We will be doing his remote car starter installation in late January.
This gentleman left very happy! He even called me when he got back to Binghamton to thank Bob and I for taking the time to go over everything with him. He said he knew that he wasn’t a big ticket customer and that we might have had better things to do. This is where I shut him down and let him know that this $250 meant more than any $2500 sale I’ve ever had. The fact that he had chose to drive over 200 miles round trip, and would do it again in a few weeks for the install meant the world to myself and my guys!
