A repeat motorcycle client from Danielsville came to Mobile Edge with a new toy for long rides: a 2003 Honda Goldwing Trike. He immediately recognized that the audio system was in need of an upgrade for the volume and clarity he desired. We got together with him at our shop so we could spend time on looking over the trike together and planning the upgrades accordingly.
Front And Rear Speaker Upgrades
In this vehicle, we stated out by replacing the existing Honda speakers in the front and rear to improve the clarity of the client’s music. We installed Hertz DCX100.3 4” coaxial speakers up front and Memphis PRX-42 4” coaxial speakers in the rear in the factory locations. These new models instantly gave life to the music, with detail and clarity that weren’t there before.
Memphis Amplifier Helps Overcome Road Noise
If you have ridden a motorcycle, you know how much louder the road noise is when compared to a car or truck. To hear your music clearly, you need power. And power means an amplifier. In this Goldwing, we installed a Memphis SA4.50 amplifier, which provides 200 watts of real power so the speakers can be heard clearly at speed.
Adding Low-End Bass With Memphis Nanoboxx
Finally, we turned our attention to giving the client some low end to his music. While the new speakers were a big improvement in sound quality, their small (4”) sizing meant they lacked any real low-end bass. For this reason, we installed a Memphis Nanoboxx 10” powered subwoofer in the tour pack. We custom-made metal mounting brackets in-house to mount the enclosure securely in place and keep it from rattling. The bracket was also engineered to hold the amplifier next to the subwoofer, keeping with the clean, industrial design.
Reliable Installation
We neatly loomed and securely mounted all of the wiring to allow for easy servicing in the future, and soldered all connections with protective heat shrink for durability. Mobile Edge goes to extreme lengths in all of our motorcycle installations to ensure that dust, moisture and vibration won’t affect the reliability of our systems.
But Wait, There’s More!
At this point, the system sounded a lot better. When the music had a kick drum or bass guitar line in it, you could instantly feel it, making the music sound much more realistic. On the day that the client came to pick up his Honda, he loved the improvement, but asked us if we could give him more sound up front. We said sure, so he left it with us for a second round of improvements.
Second Round Of Speaker Upgrades Hits Homerun
We removed the Honda “glove boxes” up front and installed a set of Hertz ESK 165.5 6.5” component speakers on custom composite speaker mounts. Now the music really came alive up front, adding increased output and clarity from these speakers.
While we thought the extra set of speakers made all the difference, we were anxious to see if the client liked them. When he arrived, we took him into the install bay and cranked it up for him. Instant smiles! He knew time spent on this trike was going to be a lot more enjoyable with his upgraded motorcycle audio system.
