This Nanticoke-based client called Mobile Edge in Lehighton to discuss options for a 2008 Saturn Sky audio system and noise control upgrade. After discussing how we could improve the comfort of his vehicle with sound deadening, we started talking about speaker upgrades. The client decided to visit our store and have a listen to our demo vehicles and displays. After he made another visit to check out different source unit options, we developed a plan to give his little roadster a few upgrades.
HushMat Sound Deadening
The client wanted to decrease the noise level in the vehicle. We suggested treating the car with HushMat sound deadening. We applied the deadening to the floors and doors to reduce transmission of sound energy into the interior. While we had the car apart, we also ran the wiring for the audio system and backup camera.
Navigation System and Backup Camera
We removed the factory radio and replaced it with a Pioneer AVIC-7201NEX multi-media receiver with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The client can communicate with friends and family, get navigation directions, and choose the music he wants to hear by just talking to the radio. To make parking the Sky easier, we added a backup camera to the vehicle.
Front Speaker Upgrade
While the doors were apart to apply the sound deadening, we mounted the woofers from a set of Audison APK165 6.5-inch components. The tweeters from the component set are installed in the factory tweeter location in the A-pillars to continue the stealth look of the installation.
Audison Amplifier Upgrade
The client liked the way our F-150 demo truck sounded, so we suggested using an amplifier with an Integrated DSP processor in his car. We mounted an Audison AP8.9bit on a HDPE plastic panel that attaches to factory hardware.
We powered the tweeters with one pair of channels from the amp. The woofers bridge into channels 3 through 6, and the factory subwoofer is bridged to channels 7 and 8.
The AP8.9bit includes several integration and tuning features that let us dramatically improve the performance of the system. We started by setting the crossover points for each speaker, then dialed in the output level and signal delay for each. Finally, we applied equalization to each to compensate for the acoustics of the vehicle.
Window Tint
While the car was in the bay, we tinted the windows with 3M Color Stable film. The client chose a 35% shade to complement the black paint on the vehicle and provide excellent UV and IR protection.
Saturn Sky Audio System Delivery
The client returned to Mobile Edge, anxious to experience his new Saturn Sky audio system. He loved that the amplifier and speakers were hidden from view. We showed him how to pair his smartphone to the Pioneer radio and reviewed how the voice control functions worked. Finally, he had a chance to listen to some music on his new system. He loved the detail and accuracy of the new speakers and how the signal processing created a focused soundstage across the dash.
