This 2021 Kia Soul owner recently dropped into Mobile Edge to inquire about adding SiriusXM to the infotainment system. While the Soul’s radio does include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard equipment, SiriusXM is only an option on trim levels with the 10.25-inch display. He wanted a solution that sounded better and was more integrated than one of the Onyx or Starmate modules that would sit in the center console. Thankfully, we offer a solution from a company called VAIS Technology that provides exactly what he was after.
SiriusXM Satellite Radio Upgrade
Our project began with one of our technicians putting the seat and steering wheel covers in place to protect the interior. Once in the bay, we removed the center console to mount the VAIS Technology GSR-HY02 interface and SXV300 SiriusXM tuner module. The interface communicates with the tuner to acquire audio and connects to the USB port in the center console. VAIS has developed bespoke software that allows the audio and display information from the satellite radio feed to be displayed as if it were information stored on an iPod.
To listen to SiriusXM, the client selects the iPod option from the radio menu. Music will start playing and artist and album information will be displayed on the radio. He can change stations just as easily as changing songs on a memory stick or iPod. All the radio commands remain standardized, so even the buttons on the steering wheel continue to function.
Our team mounted the antenna for the SXV300 tuner at the leading edge of the roof for maximum signal reception.
Accessing CarPlay and Android Auto
If the client wants to use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay with his smartphone, he can unplug the USB cable from the VAIS interface and connect his phone. We left just enough cable length to reconnect the satellite radio interface easily without leaving any unnecessary clutter in the center console.
The client was thrilled with the way the satellite radio interface works with his Kia Soul. Music and talk radio channels sound excellent, and he’s happy that he can see what song is playing or what stations he’s selected.
This particular interface from VAIS works with many Kia and Hyundai models, including the Santa Fe, Sonata, Tucson, Forte, Optima and Sorrento. VAIS has modules available for Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Chrysler, GM, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Land Rover vehicles and many more applications.
