Sound Deadening and Audio Upgrade for Allentown Toyota Matrix

A client from Allentown recently contacted the team at Mobile Edge to inquire about upgrading the audio system and adding sound deadening in his 2005 Toyota Matrix. He wanted a new radio with modern connectivity features and better sound from the system. He had been researching ways to make the interior of the vehicle quieter and was impressed with the articles we have posted on our website. After discussing radio and speaker options and explaining the sound damping materials and solutions we offer, we came up with a plan to upgrade his vehicle.

Toyota Matrix Audio System Upgrade

Plastic adapters and silicon gaskets were used in the speaker installation.

The project started with our technicians removing the factory radio from the vehicle to make way for a Pioneer AVH-W5400NEX multimedia receiver. This double-DIN radio features a 6.94-inch touchscreen and offers both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity solutions. The client can make phone calls, send text messages or choose the music he wants to hear using the voice recognition features of his phone. He can also request turn-by-turn navigation directions to any address or business by simply asking.

We upgraded the factory front door speakers with a set of Audison APX6.5 coaxials. These 6.5-inch speakers from the Prima Series are designed to work with low- to mid-power systems, thanks to their excellent efficiency. Our team created a set of plastic mounting adapters that allowed us to bolt the new speakers to the factory speaker fastener locations. We added a set of Install Bay IBSBF65 silicone speaker baffles to seal the face of the speakers to the door panel to improve their performance even more.

Sound Deadening Installation

The floor of the hatch was treated with Hushmat.

Resonances and environmental noises were reduced in the doors.

The back of the vehicle was notably quieter after our modifications.

The client was hoping that we could help reduce the transfer of road, wind and engine noise into the vehicle. We explained how our HushMat damping material on the doors and trunk adds mass to each panel to prevent energy transfer. We also suggested adding HushMat Silencer inside the doors to help absorb high-frequency energy. In all, we installed 60 square feet of HushMat silver foil butyl damping material and three rolls of HushMat Silencer.

It took our team a day and a half to complete the audio system and sound deadening upgrades in this Toyota Matrix. When the client returned to Mobile Edge to listen to the sound system, he was amazed at how great the new speakers sounded and loved how much quieter the vehicle was. The doors close with a solid thud instead of sounding tinny.
