A mother and son came into Mobile Edge recently to talk about upgrading the speakers in this very cool JDM 1994 Toyota Celica. The stock paper speakers had failed, so the mother wanted to buy her son replacements that would deliver great bass response and clean and clear midrange performance. After auditioning a few options on the displays in our store, they chose a set of Sony speakers, and we scheduled an appointment to begin the installation.
Toyota Celica Speaker Upgrade
This vehicle was imported from Japan, complete with the right-hand-drive steering wheel configuration and a double-DIN radio from Carozzeria, Pioneer’s Japanese aftermarket radio brand, in the dash.
The client chose a set of Sony Mobile ES XS-160ES 6.5-inch coaxial speakers to bring this audio system back to life. These speakers feature performance-improving technologies usually found on products at two to three times their price.
After removing the inner door trim panels, we milled a set of mounting adapters out of expanded PVC that would let the new speakers bolt directly to the factory fastener locations in the doors. We added a layer of our premium sound deadening to the adapters and a pair silicone speaker baffles. The baffles seal against the trim panel and help to ensure that all the sound from the speakers is funneled into the interior rather than being allowed to bounce around behind the trim panel. The sound deadening adds mass to the mounting adapters to improve bass response and clarity. We wired the speakers to the radio and performed a listening test to ensure that everything would sound amazing.
