A repeat client from Germansville recently dropped into Mobile Edge to ask about upgrading the sound system in his cool 1993 Nissan 300ZX. We’ve designed and installed several sound systems for this client over the years, so he knows our capabilities well. He wanted to replace the existing gear in the Nissan with something more modern but didn’t want to add a significant amount of weight or take up much space. We demonstrated a few options to the client, then settled on a simple system that would sound amazing.
Nissan 300ZX Radio and Speaker Upgrade
We removed the old Pioneer radio, Alpine amplifier, wiring and speakers from the vehicle to get things started. The client chose one of the fantastic Sony XAV-AX8100 floating-face radios as the heart of the audio system upgrade. This radio features an 8.95-inch display that mounts just in front of the dash. The chassis of the radio itself is single-DIN-sized, so it all fits perfectly into the stock radio location in the car without any modifications.
This Sony car radio includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration technologies. Using either of these systems (depending on which phone you own), you can make phone calls, send text messages or choose from dozens of entertainment options using simple voice commands. The client can also request turn-by-turn navigation directions to almost any address or business in North America. All the navigation options include real-time traffic information in major urban areas to optimize the route to avoid delays.
Next, we installed a set of Sony Mobile ES XS-160ES 6.5-inch coaxial speakers in the doors. These premium speakers are part of the Mobile ES line. They feature high-quality woofer cone materials that are well-damped and rigid without being heavy, so midbass and midrange information are crystal clear. In addition, the soft-dome tweeters deliver smooth high-frequency response, so everything sounds great.
Compact Subwoofer Adds Great Bass
The last part of the audio system upgrade was to install a Sony SX-AW8-powered subwoofer in the cargo area behind the rear seat. This all-in-one enclosure features a low-profile 8-inch subwoofer driven by a 75-watt amplifier integrated into the cast-aluminum enclosure. Most subwoofers of this style have plastic housings – the aluminum design makes this one rigid and helps it deliver great sound. The subwoofer system delivers a good solid kick that adds excitement to the music without overworking the door speakers.
