The owner of this 1995 Pontiac Trans Am recently contacted the team at Mobile Edge for some help in upgrading the stereo in the vehicle. The owner had tried to wire some new speakers into the vehicle but realized he was in over his head. After inspecting the vehicle and talking to the client about his goals for the stereo system, we put together an audio upgrade package that would deliver great sound and all the features he wanted.
Pontiac Radio Upgrade
We started the project by removing the factory radio to make way for a Sony XAV-AX210SXM multimedia receiver. This radio includes a high-quality tuner, a CD mechanism and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. The client can play music stored on his phone or can stream from a service like Pandora or iHeartRadio.
We added a Momento DRC300 backup camera to the rear of the vehicle so that the client can park the car easily and safely. The camera image displays automatically on the system’s screen as soon as the transmission is put into reverse gear.
Trans Am Stereo System Amplifier and Speakers
Next, we removed the front and rear speakers from the doors and sail panels of the car and installed a set of Sony XS-GS1621C components in the doors and matching XS-GS1621 coaxial speakers in the rear locations. The GS speakers from Sony offer impressive performance for their modest price and fit nicely into the factory speaker locations with some new adapter brackets. The amplifier built into the radio powers the Sony speakers.
To provide some good, clean bass in the car, we added a Hertz HCP2 amplifier and a DS25 10-inch subwoofer. The amp is mounted to a custom-welded steel bracket that is mounted to the right side of the vehicle just in front of the spare tire. We installed the subwoofer in a shallow enclosure that is bolted to the back wall of the cargo area. The grille on top of the woofer allows the client to put cargo into the trunk without fear of damaging anything.

After a long day of work, we had the stereo installed in the Pontiac Trans Am and the amplifier dialed-in to work with the new Sony speakers and Hertz subwoofer. The client returned to Mobile Edge and immediately got into the car for a listen. He was thrilled with the improvement in sound quality and loved how the subwoofer added a richness and realism to his music. After we explained how to connect his smartphone to the radio, he was on his way. If you’re interested in upgrading the audio system in your car, give us a call or click the red button below.
