A client from Allentown recently brought his 105th Anniversary Edition 2008 Harley-Davidson Road Glide to Mobile Edge for an audio system upgrade. As most Harley owners experience, the original stereo was behind the times regarding connectivity options, and the system didn’t play loudly. The client didn’t want us to make any permanent modifications to this limited-edition motorcycle, aside from configuring it to deliver great sound. We treat all our client vehicles like royalty, and this amazing Harley would be no exception.
Aquatic AV Motorcycle Radio Upgrade
The first thing we addressed was the radio. Aquatic AV’s AQ-MP-5UBT-HS radio is explicitly designed for 1998 through 2013 Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Known as the MP5+, this source unit includes a bright 3-inch color display, Bluetooth audio streaming and support for MP3 file playback from a USB memory stick. Best of all, the radio uses the same wire harness plug as the original Harley radio. Having this connector means that we didn’t have to cut or splice any wires or change connectors.
Hertz Powersport Amplifier Delivers Huge Sound
The output of the Aquatic AV radio feeds a Hertz HMP 4D four-channel powersports amplifier. The chassis and wiring on this amplifier are water-tight to give it an IP64 rating. Our team fabricated a custom steel amp rack that bolts to the radio mounting bracket in the fairing. A custom amplifier mounting panel was welded to those upright supports and is drilled and tapped so the amp can be held in place securely. We finished the amp mounting bracket with a thorough treatment of black rust-preventing paint to ensure that it will look great for decades.
The amplifier is configured as a two-channel solution by bridging the front and rear speaker pairs. When wired this way, it can deliver 150 watts of power to each of the front speakers.
Harley-Davidson Fairing Speakers
The last step was to install a set of Hertz HMX 6.5 / C speakers in the stock locations in the fairing. These speakers are designed to be surface-mounted. Our team created a custom adapter bracket that includes a new mounting provision for the large 1.4-inch tweeter so that we can mount them to the fairing from the rear. The adapter was drilled and tapped to bolt to the bike without any modifications to the fairing. Once in place, the factory-installed stock grille keeps things looking original.
Pennsylvania’s Best Motorcycle Audio Upgrades
While the sound system on this ultra-rare Harley-Davidson Road Glide wasn’t complicated, installing it in a way that maintained the integrity and value of the bike was paramount. The client was thrilled with the new radio, amplifier and speaker installation and loved the way the bike looks and sounds. If you would like to upgrade the sound system on your motorcycle, drop by Mobile Edge in Lehighton, give us a call or send an e-mail using our contact page.
