A client from Freeland recently contacted the Mobile Edge team to ask about upgrading the speakers and subwoofer system in his 2014 Ford Mustang. The client already had some audio system upgrades in the car but wasn’t happy with their performance. So after checking out the vehicle and letting the client audition speakers on our displays, we put together a new system design that would sound great and look fantastic.
Custom Mustang Subwoofer System
The focus of the new audio system was a custom subwoofer solution for the trunk of the Mustang. We started with a sealed subwoofer enclosure for the pair of Hertz DS25 10-inch subwoofers. Next, we built a spacer to raise the enclosure off the floor, then added spacers to the face to create a trim panel. The three-piece trim has four large openings to let the bass into the trunk area. We finished the center section in black vinyl with red accent inserts at the bottom and sides. The sides are wrapped in a gray carpet that matches the rest of the trunk.
As we typically do in our installations, we created an amp rack out of welded steel. The rack also serves to secure the enclosure to the vehicle so it won’t move around. Two straps extend down behind the rear seat, and two bolts at the top hold everything in place. The Sony six-channel amp is bolted to the center of the rack.
Ford Amplifier and Speaker Upgrade
The next step was to remove the PA-style speakers from the front doors, allowing us to install a set of Sony Mobile ES-Series XS-680ES speakers there. These speakers feature a large soft-dome tweeter and a well-damped woofer cone to deliver amazing clarity.
The client chose one of the four-channel Sony XM-GS6DSP six-channel amplifiers to power the system. This amp can produce 45 watts of power to the front and rear speakers while delivering a healthy 350 watts of power to the subwoofers. What makes the amp unique is its digital signal delay and equalization features. After configuring the crossovers and signal delay settings, we used our RTA microphone to set the equalizer to ensure that the system sounds realistic and detailed.
Pennsylvania’s Best Car Audio Upgrades
After a few days’ work, we had this Mustang looking and sounding great. The client was thrilled with the new subwoofer system and loved the trim panel we had created. He hopped in for a listen and was amazed at the detail the new speakers, subwoofer and amplifier delivered.
