A client from Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania, contacted the team at Mobile Edge to inquire about upgrading the sound system in his 2014 Ford F-150 with a new subwoofer system. After looking at the vehicle and talking with the client about his expectations, our team put together a quote that would add some great bass to the existing audio system, and we’d finish it with a little extra style.
Custom Ford F-150 Subwoofer Enclosure
The project started with our team taking careful measurements of the area under the rear seat to design and construct an enclosure for three Memphis Car Audio MCR8D4 8-inch subwoofers. We built the enclosure from ¾-inch MDF to ensure that it wouldn’t vibrate and add unwanted noise when played at high volumes. The enclosure is finished in a durable black carpet with white vinyl-wrapped inserts on the sides and around the mesh grilles that protect the subwoofers.
Subwoofer Amplifier Installation
The client chose a Memphis Power Reference PRX1.500 amplifier to drive the subwoofers. This amp is rated to produce 500 watts of power into a 1-ohm load. In addition, our team created one of our trademark welded steel amp racks that secures the amp under the driver’s seat of the pickup truck. The rack is painted in corrosion-resistant black paint so that it will continue to look great for years.
To extract an audio signal from the factory sound system, we installed an AudioControl LC2i line output converter just in front of the amplifier. The LC2i takes the speaker-level signal from the radio and drops the voltage down to a level that can be fed to the preamp input on the amplifier. We added the optional ACR1 remote level control to the converter so that the client can turn the subwoofer level up or down without affecting the output of the door speakers.
Window Tint Adds Protection and Style
With the audio equipment installed and configured to work with the original radio, we finished the project by tinting the windows of this Ford F-150 with 3M Color Stable window film. This high-performance film offers excellent UV rejection to protect the driver from the harmful effects of the sun. The tint also gives the white truck a cool and classy appearance by highlighting the black grille and window trim.
