This time of the year I spend a good part of my day talking to customers about remote car starters. One thing that many of these customers have in common is that they do not have a clue if their vehicle is equipped with a transponder key. Most do not know what a transponder key even does. So I figured that, being the expert, it is my job to help educate consumers about this subject. Transponder keys have a significant impact on remote car starter installations and it is important that our customers understand what they do.
In this video, I explain what a transponder key is, how to tell if you have one and how it impacts your remote car starter installation.
I hope this will prove useful to anyone that is contemplating a remote car starter purchase. Please let me know what you think!

Thank you Mitch but here is my situation.
I have a 2010 Subaru Impreza Sedan, right hand drive out of the Japanese market.
My key has the lock, unlock and trunk pop on it.
When i lock the vehicle there is a key that flashes on the dashboard, when i unlock via the key it goes off. My park lights also flashes with each button press.
Now, i tried the tin foil trick and the car did start but the key light on the dashboard was highlighted.
When i turned off the car, removed the foil and started again the light was not visible.
So i still dont know if my key has a transponder or not. Any Ideas/suggestions? Because i really want to add an alarm/remote start to my car.
Also, not sure if this would help but once the car is locked via the key press and i try to manually open the car with the key in the door, the horn goes off in an alarm fashion and i have to press the unlock via the key for it to stop, The key on the dashboard will flash until i press the unlock on the key.
After that is done i can then manually lock or unlock the car (driver side only) without that “alarm feature”.
