If you own a truck, then you owe it to yourself to stop by Mobile Edge and check out our vast selection of truck bed covers. For most of us, a bed cover is the single biggest item that will improve the functionality and security of your truck. You have that big storage area called a bed that loves to hold water, snow and almost anything else that falls from the sky. And we all know that any cargo item in your bed would be much more secure if people did not see it.
The good news is that a bed cover solves those two major problems. They are broken down into two major styles known as hard covers and soft covers. Here are our most popular models in each of these two designs.
Hard Truck Bed Covers
Hard bed covers are far and away the most popular styles these days. Years ago, they only came in a one-piece fiberglass design that was very bulky – when you needed to remove it, you had to find a second person to help you. Well, times have changed. We still offer the one-piece covers, but now they come in a composite material that is much lighter than fiberglass, and you can still have them painted to match your vehicle for an elegant look. The design of the one-piece covers is pretty simple, as they hinge up from the front of the bed near the cab and use lift supports to help hold the weight. They do a great job of protecting your cargo from theft and Mother Nature.
The downside of this style cover is limited access from the sides, and you still need a place to store a cover as big as your bed opening in the event you have to remove it.
Hard Truck Bed Covers: Folding Covers
The next evolution in bed covers is the folding design, where you have three hard panels that will cover the bed. The idea here is that the individual panels are much lighter than the one-piece style, and you can flip open one panel, two panels or all three for whole bed access. Some of these styles are designed to be easily removed if needed, and some will flip up against the cab of the truck, giving you full bed access. They still do a good job with security and weather protection, and are very popular in our store.
Hard Truck Bed Covers: Retracting Covers
Retracting bed covers are as good as it gets for many people. These have a very classy look when covering your bed, and can easily be retracted into a small canister that gets mounted right behind the cab. Weather protection and security are great, and they come in three different styles. Some models require you to open and close them while others use a spring system, like a garage door, to retract the cover. If you would like to push a button to open or close the cover, we have motorized units as well.
The only drawback to this unit is that the canister will take up a small amount of bed space, and it is the most expensive style of hard cover. But, as they say, you get what you pay for.
Soft Truck Bed Covers
Soft bed covers, or tonneau covers as they are often called, have been around for decades. Most often, they are made of black vinyl that gets mounted to a channel system along your bed rails. Soft covers have evolved just like everything else and are now broken down into three major styles.
Soft Truck Bed Covers: Rollup Covers
The rollup cover continues to be very popular as it is extremely easy to use. When you need bed access, you simply unlatch the cover and start rolling it toward the cab of your truck. If you need to drive up the road, you simply roll it all the way up and secure it into place.
Soft Truck Bed Covers: Folding Covers
Folding covers are designed to mimic the operation of the solid covers, except they are made of vinyl attached to an aluminum frame. It is very easy to take them on and off the bed in case you need full bed access.
Soft Truck Bed Covers: Hinged Covers
Hinged bed covers are also designed to mimic the solid covers in that they use a one-piece design of vinyl stretched over a metal frame that hinges up for bed access.
The advantage of a soft cover is the price of admission. They are less expensive to purchase, and they also do a good job of weather protection. Where they fall short is in security. A person with a pocket knife can easily get into your truck bed, so carrying expensive items in your bed may not be the best idea if they’re only hidden by a soft cover. It does allow for the out-of-sight/out-of-mind mentality – if someone doesn’t know you have something under the cover, they may not know there is something to steal.
