A repeat client from Jim Thorpe came to Mobile Edge in Lehighton, looking to improve the audio system in his new 2015 Toyota 4Runner. Our team went out to the vehicle with him so we could listen to the stock stereo system. He told us what he liked and what he disliked about the sound. As we looked at the vehicle with him, we made some observations about truck accessories that might benefit him. We went back in the store and started laying out some ideas for upgrading the audio system. He liked our ideas, so we developed a two-step 4Runner audio upgrade for his Toyota.
Step-One Is New Speakers
We knew right from the beginning that this 4Runner was going to need new speakers. As Toyota has spent more and more money on technology in their vehicles, something had to suffer to keep their prices in line, and speakers are one of the areas that suffered the most.
Hushmat And Hertz Speakers Help Optimize The Audio In This 4Runner
In this vehicle, we started by installing Hushmat damping material to the doors. This product reduces road noise and helps eliminate any rattling or buzzing that can occur when installing high-performance speakers.
In the front, we installed Hertz DSK165.3 6.5” component speakers. We installed the woofer and tweeter in the factory speaker locations and fabricated custom composite speaker mounts to properly secure the drivers in their respective locations.
In the rear doors, we installed Hertz DCX165.3 6.5” coaxial speakers in the factory locations in custom composite speaker mounts, just like the front doors. We really like the Hertz speakers for the money because they are very efficient, so the client typically sees a 20% increase in output, which is always a plus.
Step-Two Is Bass And More Power
Future plans call for a second appointment to install a subwoofer, and an amplifier to power the whole system.
Weathertech Window Vents
As mentioned earlier, we discussed several ideas to improve the cosmetics and functionality of the truck while it was here, and the client chose three of them. We installed Weathertech side window vents to allow the client access to fresh, clean air without all the wind noise. These are also great to get some air in the 4Runner in the event of rain or snow.
N-Fab Step Bars
Anyone who owns a truck or SUV knows the benefits of a set of truck steps, and the 4Runner in particular sees a tough, rugged look with the right product. For this vehicle, we installed a set of N-Fab steps in the textured black finish. As you can see from the pictures, they woke up the cosmetic impact of the vehicle.
3M Window Film Evens Out Factory Tint
The last upgrade to the vehicle was window tinting. Our team installed 3M Color Stable film in a 20% darkness level to match the rear doors. We love the quality and performance benefits of 3M window film. Our client will see noticeably less heat coming in through the front doors while eliminating 99% of the sun’s harmful UV rays. In this day and age, when more and more people are getting skin cancer, adding window film to a vehicle is a smart idea.
Step-One A Success!
When the client came to pick up his vehicle, he loved the new look. As he walked around the vehicle and tested out the steps, he appreciated the attention to detail in our work. When he sat inside and turned on the stereo for the first time, he loved the improvement in sound quality. When he left, he was already excited to come back and do the second stage of the audio upgrade.
