Customers who love music keep bringing their vehicles to Mobile Edge because we love building great-sounding car audio systems. One way we achieve amazing sound quality is through our use of a Digital Signal Processor (DSP). A DSP is a powerful tool, and it can transform the way a set of speakers, a subwoofer and an amplifier sounds in a car. Let’s look at how a DSP allows us to tune your mobile entertainment system.
What Is It?
There are many different makes and models of DSPs, but they all offer similar features: input signal summing, crossovers, equalization, time alignment and output level control. DSP processors are typically configured using a laptop computer in conjunction with a calibrated RTA microphone. We install a DSP processor between your radio (OEM or aftermarket) and your amplifiers. Then, using these tools and our expertise, we can fine-tune the frequency response of your system and adjust where the sound comes from for an incredibly realistic listening experience.
Signal Summing
When installing new speakers and an amp in a vehicle with a factory radio, we often have to combine signals from multiple speaker channels in the vehicle. The combination of multiple signals provides us with the full audio spectrum, ensuring we can provide deep bass and detailed highs for you. With that, we can set crossover frequencies that work with the speakers you have selected for your vehicle.
Equalization
A speaker that sounds great in a store display will sound very different once we install it in a car. The small space and different surfaces made of many different materials cause reflections that dramatically alter what you hear. The speaker itself is playing the same sounds, but the net result is dramatically different. We use our calibrated RTA to smooth the frequency response peaks and dips to provide smooth, natural sound.
Time Alignment
Because you sit on one side of your vehicle, the closer speakers are not only perceived as being louder, but you hear them before the speakers on the other side of the vehicle. We combine the ability to delay the signal going to the nearby speakers with careful level-matching to create what is known as a soundstage. Now your music will spread out evenly across the vehicle. Instruments will be focused, and voices will sound as if the performer is sitting on your dash or even out on your hood. It’s truly an amazing experience.
