The staff at Mobile Edge in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, is known for doing things differently. When we design a system, more often than not, we create the amp racks out of a metal bar, plate or rod. Most shops use wood for their amp racks. While we do use wood on occasion, there are some significant benefits to working with metal. Let’s look at a few of the reasons why metal is our friend.
Design Flexibility
When we are looking for locations in vehicles to install products, quite often we need to make the best possible use of the available storage space. Under seats, in storage compartments and on the back wall of trucks are popular mounting locations for amplifiers, processors and power distribution components. If we were to use wood, the added thickness of the wood itself could prevent us from being able to make everything fit. With metal, even 1/8” or 1/16” thick is enough to secure the amplifier or processor in place.
Unique Looks
Metal amp racks give a system a unique look. We can quickly attach different pieces to create shapes that would require using much more wood for the same effect. We can hover products in space without fear of the amp rack ever failing. If we need more length on a bar or rod, we can quickly and easily attach more to the end of the previous piece. That’s very hard to do with wood – and while maintaining strength.
Speedy Mockup When Creating Metal Amp Racks
One great feature of using metal is that we can secure a few mounting brackets to the vehicle, then position the mounting bracket for the product and literally “stick” the two together with our welder. Once everything is located, we remove the tacked-together rack and finish-weld everything. A good coat of paint ensures the rack always looks neat and tidy.
Training And Tools Of The Trade
Our investment in tools to make metal amp racks is significant. We purchased a welding jig table that includes clamps to let us hold each piece of metal in place as we design the amp rack. A cutoff saw lets us cut metal bar and plate steel quickly and accurately. Our welding machine makes it easy to join all these pieces together reliably. And training, if you have ever done any welding, then you know the importance of getting proper weld penetration for good strength. So we have invested in training and followed by hours and hours of practice to ensure we get each weld right the first time.
